They say comedy is the hardest type of acting to do. For most comedic actors these days, they sort of seem to just be playing themselves and are pretty much consistently the same. Usually it is the material that is funny and so things work. But for me, I think the very best actors are the ones with range who can do it all and perhaps the best of those are the dramatic actors who can "crossover" into comedy as apposed to a comedic actor who can play a role in a drama. Check out the attached clip from Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Along Came Polly". This guy is terrific and these clips are hilarious. Again, great writing, but coupled with great acting, and you get this masterpiece.
